What the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam actually asks.
An associate-level certification validating expertise in designing secure, resilient, high-performing, and cost-optimized architectures on AWS. This page breaks down the exam format, domain weighting, key architectural trade-offs, and how to practice effectively.
The exam at a glance
Key parameters from the official AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate (SAA-C03) Exam Guide.
- 65 questions in 130 minutes — 2 minutes per question. SAA-C03 questions are long scenario descriptions that require fast pattern recognition.
- 150 USD, and it sits at the Associate tier.
- 50 scored, 15 unscored. AWS includes 15 unscored trial items to evaluate questions for future forms. They do not count toward your result.
- 720 out of 1000 to pass on a scaled score.
- No penalty for incorrect answers. Always select an answer for every question before time expires.
Time management is the decisive factor on SAA-C03. Because questions present detailed business and technical constraints, flag complex scenarios immediately and bank quick wins on straightforward architecture questions first.
Four domains, weighted across architecture pillars
Domain weightings dictate where preparation effort yields the greatest score impact.
- Domain 1 — Design Secure Architectures (30%). The largest domain (~20 questions). IAM policies, roles, instance profiles, KMS encryption at rest and in transit, Secrets Manager, VPC security groups, network ACLs, and PrivateLink.
- Domain 2 — Design Resilient Architectures (26%). Roughly 17 questions. Decoupling architectures with SQS, SNS, and EventBridge; Multi-AZ RDS and Aurora failover; Auto Scaling across availability zones; and Disaster Recovery (Backup & Restore, Pilot Light, Warm Standby, Active-Active).
- Domain 3 — Design High-Performing Architectures (24%). Roughly 16 questions. High-throughput storage (EBS gp3/io2, EFS, FSx for Windows/Lustre), in-memory caching with ElastiCache and DAX, edge acceleration with CloudFront and Global Accelerator, and Direct Connect hybrid networking.
- Domain 4 — Design Cost-Optimized Architectures (20%). Roughly 13 questions. S3 Lifecycle and Intelligent-Tiering economics, Compute Savings Plans, Spot instances for fault-tolerant workloads, and eliminating inter-AZ or NAT Gateway data transfer fees.
Security and Resilience account for 56% of the exam. Mastering IAM trust policies, KMS key types, SQS/SNS decoupling, and Multi-AZ database topologies covers the majority of scored points.
Question types and architectural constraints
Every SAA-C03 question tests trade-offs between competing architectural goals.
- Multiple choice: One correct architecture and three plausible distractors. Look for the defining constraint in the final sentence.
- Multiple response: Choose two or three correct answers out of five or six options. These often require selecting complementary parts of a complete multi-tier solution.
Pay close attention to key qualifiers in question stems:
- "Least operational overhead" → Prioritize serverless and fully managed services (e.g. SQS, EventBridge, Aurora Serverless, AWS Backup) over self-managed EC2 instances or custom automation scripts.
- "Most cost-effective" → Prioritize S3 Gateway Endpoints (free), S3 Intelligent-Tiering, Spot instances, and Savings Plans.
- "Lowest latency / highest throughput" → Prioritize CloudFront, DAX, ElastiCache, and EBS io2 Block Express over relational queries or standard volumes.
How to prepare for an associate architecture exam
Passing SAA-C03 requires understanding when to select one AWS service over another under specific technical constraints.
Three study habits that work:
- Master service boundaries: Understand why EFS is chosen over EBS for multi-instance POSIX sharing, or why SQS FIFO is chosen over SQS Standard when message ordering and deduplication are mandatory.
- Practice full-length 130-minute timed mocks: Sitting through 65 lengthy scenario questions tests stamina, reading speed, and disciplined time allocation under real exam conditions.
- Review every distractor: Read why incorrect options fail. Understanding why a plausible-looking option is suboptimal solidifies your architectural decision-making.
